Ko wai mātou

Te Kāhui Hauora o Te Tauihu

The Wellness Alliance

The name we have chosen is not just a label, but a beacon of unity and shared purpose. It captures the very essence of coming together, weaving the strength and wisdom of our iwi (tribes) and hapū (sub-tribes) into a collective effort aimed at nurturing health and well-being of Māori in Te Tauihu o Te Waka (Top of the South Island).

This name is a testament to our collaboration, a reminder that when we come together, we can achieve remarkable things. It symbolises our shared journey, our common aspirations, and our commitment to uplifting each other. Here, in the heart of Te Tauihu, we stand together, bound by our heritage and driven by the desire to create a healthier, stronger future for all.

Our Journey, Our Pathway, Our Whakapapa

Nestled in the heart of Te Tauihu o Te Waka-a-Māui – the prow of the demigod Māui’s canoe – lies a land rich in history, culture, and natural treasures. This northern tip of the South Island has long been a beacon for many iwi (tribes), each leaving an indelible mark on its fertile, mineral-laden soil. Today, eight tribes proudly uphold the mantle of tangata whenua, the indigenous people of this vibrant land.

The eight tribes that form the cultural backbone of Te Tauihu (Nelson, Marlborough, Tasman):

Ngāti Kuia, Rangitāne, and Ngāti Apa, descendants of the Kurahaupō canoe.

Ngāti Koata, Ngāti Rārua, and Ngāti Toa, who trace their lineage to the Tainui canoe.

Ngāti Tama and Te Ātiawa, who hail from the Tokomaru waka.

Our logo

Inspiration to inform the design of our logo was drawn from the koru of a fern, that illustrates its deep connection to new life and growth. This powerful imagery aligns with our vision of fostering health and vitality within the community.

At the heart of our logo is the koru, an elegant spiral, ever-unfolding, representing the pathway towards renewal and energy (wairua). It is a constant reminder that growth is a continuous journey, requiring constant effort and care.

The colours symbolise the many waterways, oceans and tides that flow through ebbs and flows in Te Tauihu. These waters were more than just a visual element, they embody the essence of life itself and sustainability that is clear and pure that is a tribute to the natural environment. This highlights the deep connection between the health of the land and the health of its people.

Together, the koru and the flowing waters tell a story of strength, hope, resilience, and interconnectedness symbolising the people connected to the land and the land to them.
