Our strengths and challenges of our people
Cultural connection
Being involved in Māori culture was very or quite important to 29.5% of Māori in Te Tauihu, compared to the national percentage rate of 45.2%. This highlights the need for increased cultural engagement and support in our rohe.
Language revitalisation
In Te Tauihu in 2018, 11.3% of Māori aged 15 years and over regularly used te reo Māori in the home, compared to 18.4% of Māori nationally.
Home ownership
In Te Tauihu, we have one of the highest Māori home-ownership rates, with 2,703 Māori owning or partially owning their homes in our rohe.
Primary Care Enrolment
In October 2023, 16.7% of Māori in Te Tauihu were not enrolled with primary health care, compared to 4.3% for non-Māori. In 2018 9.1% of Māori aged over 20 reported often postponing or putting off doctors visits.
